French Bulldogs are brachycephalic — that squishy, short-muzzled face we love. The trade-off is a smaller airway: narrowed nostrils, a longer soft palate, a narrower windpipe. They're already working a little harder to breathe on a good day.
Add a collar, and every pull drives that force into the front of the throat, right over the windpipe — coughing, gagging, breathing distress, and over time a risk of tracheal damage. It's simply the wrong place to put the pressure.
Frenchies also just… slip out of them
A Frenchie's neck is often as wide as its head, so a collar loose enough to be comfortable is loose enough to reverse straight out of — usually the moment something interesting happens across the road.
The fix: a vest harness
A well-fitted vest harness spreads the load across the chest and shoulders and keeps it entirely off the throat. That's why every harness we stock is a chest-loading vest, never a neck design.
- Pressure sits on the chest, not the windpipe
- A snug vest can't be backed out of like a collar
- Look for breathable air-mesh so it doesn't add heat
